CAPITAL STAFF & LEADERSHIP
As Capital’s senior leader, Troy has the primary responsibility for leading our organization and teaching at most weekend services. He manages our Leadership Team and identifies and implements the strategic direction of Capital. Troy is also the Chair of Capital’s Board of Directors. As one of the founding team members of Capital, Troy served the church as Executive Pastor for six years before becoming the Lead Pastor in the spring of 2004. Troy is a big fan of chocolate chip cookies and spending time with his girls – wife Suzanne, and their daughters Emma, Alyssa, and Morgan.

Ministry & Events Coordinator
Pamela supports, develops, and resources small groups, life stage, and other adult ministry groups at Capital. This includes managing church wide events and overseeing women’s ministry leadership. On all sides, Pam is the ultimate administrator and facilitator. She has a Bachelor of Arts in History as well as her Juris Doctor Law Degree. She always has a smile on her face, with one tiny, yellow exception. She really (like, really!) doesn’t care for yellow M&M’s. Pam is a proud mom of three children.

Director of Kid’s Ministries
Debbie gives leadership to our Capital Kids Ministry, which serves children age newborn through fifth grade. She manages curriculum selection, recruits and trains Kid’s Ministry volunteers, and leads special events that offer opportunities for children to love God and love others. Debbie has her B.S. in Child and Family Development from the University of Utah. When Debbie is not spending time with her husband Mike and their four children, Isabelle, Grace, Thomas, and Sam, she enjoys precious quiet moments of reading, diving into a great piece of cheesecake, and the challenge of sorting her way through thrift stores to find a fabulous deal.

Suzanne primarily serves as our Worship Leader, inspiring people to engage God through music. She directs a talented group of musicians each week. Additionally, she has oversight of Kid’s Ministry and serves on the Leadership Team. Suzanne has a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Music from Central Bible College. She deeply enjoys devouring a good book and scoops of mint chocolate chip gelato (simultaneously). But nothing makes her happier than spending time with her husband and making her girls giggle.
Fun Fact: Suzanne is a diehard fan of Florida State Football
Wendy is responsible for accounting, financial reporting, and benefit administration at Capital. Wendy earned her degree from the University of New Hampshire where she studied Business Administration and Accounting. Wendy and her husband Kevin have one son, Zach, and one demanding dog, Bailey. A champion organizer, Wendy is as passionate about order and cleanliness as she is about her dislike of drivers that tailgate. She is a staunch believer in the power of prayer and enjoys indulging her sweet tooth.

Kelly handles all things visual at Capital. More often than not, if you see it at Capital, Kelly has a hand in it. He has a passion for the visual aspect of worship and for creating inspiring and effective ways to engage people in discipleship. Kelly has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Utah State University with an emphasis in Graphic Design. He and his wife Shelli have two sons, Noah and Brooks. When he isn’t making pretty things at Capital, he can be found traveling and enjoying adventures with his wife, coaching soccer and playing with his boys, watching a good game, or taking in a good movie.
Fun Fact: Kelly is the commissioner of the official Capital Fantasy Football League
Director of Organizational Development
Leif provides leadership in the areas of staff and ministry management, administration, and human resources. He supervises several employees and serves on the Leadership Team. Leif brings a unique perspective and wealth of knowledge having spent years consulting with the leadership of churches around the country. Leif is a big fan of BBQ and at some point every day he can literally be found underwater. He enjoys competitive swimming and kicks his way from Alcatraz to the coast of San Francisco each year. His goal is to drop his time for the 1.5 mile swim to 30 wetsuit and shark-free minutes.
Fun Fact: Leif won a Rube Goldberg competition for creating a really complicated doorbell
Director of Operations
Dennis gives leadership to our weekend services and oversees multiple volunteer serving teams as well as our facility operations. Dennis serves on the Leadership Team and brings valuable insight after spending over thirty years in business management and logistics. Dennis is a licensed minister through the Assemblies of God, with a passion for serving as a “tug boat” for staff and those in the Capital community, coming alongside individuals and couples to pull them along no matter where they are at in their journey with God. A tried-and-true Texan and steak-lover, his first true love is his high school sweetheart, Sandy, to whom he has been married for over 47 years. Second in his heart are his six grandchildren.
Fun Fact: Dennis enjoys “chick-flics”
Kelly serves as Associate Pastor with oversight of pastoral care and several ministries. Additionally, she manages various administrative and pastoral responsibilities for our Lead Pastor. Prior to moving to Utah, Kelly has experience as a missionary in the Middle East, as an Executive Assistant to two Assemblies of God Network Pastors, and as the founding Lead Pastor of Eastside Community Church near Columbus, Ohio. A published author, Kelly is passionate about helping people discover their God-given potential. Kelly shares three precious children with her husband Greg, who is the director of “180 Ministries for Girls” – a regional Teen Challenge Center. When she’s not serving at Capital or assisting Greg, she may literally be found standing on her head (her hidden talent!).

Leadership Team Member
Tara has served in a variety of positions at Capital and we’re excited to see her teach more in the near future. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in theology as she continues to serve on the Capital Leadership Team. Tara considers herself an unofficial member of the Welcome Team and gets a kick out of hugging as many people as possible—especially those who aren’t quite sure they really want to get hugged at all. Originally from Boston, Tara does not have a Boston accent but is considering teaching her two beautiful children to speak without the letter “r” and to have an aggressive addiction to Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.
Fun Fact: Tara was a member of the 1992 High School National Cheerleading Championship Team
Director of Community Engagement
McKenzie is primarily responsible for strategic volunteer development, leading our Compassion Ministries to serve people in our community and world, and has oversight of internal and external communications. A member of the Capital Leadership Team, McKenzie is passionate about connecting people at Capital through these areas. She developed a tireless work ethic, energy, and enthusiasm during her years in the private sector at a major corporation and is overjoyed to pour that energy into ministry. You can usually find McKenzie on the stage with the worship team at a weekend service or indulging in her favorite guilty pleasure, nachos.
Fun Fact: McKenzie is a solid Hula Hooper
Phil is responsible for leading our Salt Lake and Park City youth groups and loves working with young adults, their parents, and the volunteer team of adults that makes the whole ministry happen. Phil spent 12 years working at other churches prior to joining Capital. His life verse, from The Message, “don’t take yourself too seriously, take God seriously” (Micah 6:8) is what guides his day to day decisions and choices. He thinks it’s important for young people to learn that we are messy throughout this life and yet God loves our beautiful mess. Phil and his wife Melissa have three beautiful children. Phil has tried to teach his family the ways of hockey and has been only somewhat successful. Phil prides himself in being a healthy dose of jock, nerd, and redneck all rolled up into one.
Fun Fact: Phil is a big fan of Cotton Candy Ice Cream and the Winnipeg Jets
Operations/Kids Ministry Assistant
Jackie provides administrative support to Operations and Communications. She also assists our Director of Kids Ministry with weekend services and all kids-related programming. She is responsible for all things administrative – big and small. From making sure our bulletins are printed and ready to be read to taking on a leadership role at our Annual Vacation Bible School, adults and children alike will experience the grammatical expertise and creative energy of Miss Jackie! In her downtime she enjoys savoring a great story, eating Indian food and watching the ocean wave. Jackie has her B.A. in English from Westminster College and is currently working toward her MDiv at Fuller Theological Seminary.
Fun Fact: Jackie is learning to tap dance
CAPITAL CHURCH BOARD
Carol’s professional background is in the field of dentistry and medicine. She has 15+ years of experience culminating in a role as the executive administrator of 5 clinics covering the majority of the State of California. After she and her husband began serving on short-term mission trips, they saw desperate need for medical expertise. Throwing herself fully and faithfully into God’s calling, Carol acquired training specifically on dental extraction to meet the community demand. She also spent one year living in France to learn French in preparation for a move to Mali. Leaving at the peak of their careers in California, the Gilliands committed to full-time missionary work at Hopital Femme et Enfants. During her 4 years in Mali, Carol helped set up an operative dental clinic which is still functioning well today. Her humble strength and confidence in Jesus is evident in the ways she fully serves and loves others. Even among these great accomplishments, Carol is most proud of her children and wonderful husband, John.
Fun Fact: Carol is a big fan of Mexican and Thai food but will not eat liver.
LARRY W. KRAISS
Larry Kraiss is a physician at the University of Utah. He is a graduate of Vanguard University of Southern California and Baylor College of Medicine and took his residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle. One of the founding couples of Capital, Larry and his wife Karen are parents to three adult children, and enjoy living in Utah for the hiking, snowshoeing, and biking. Larry’s passion in ministry is in the integration of faith and learning. He likes a good plan, stimulating conversation, and he prefers to avoid clutter and chaos. He is most proud of a long, committed marriage to Karen and can turn almost any meal into a special occasion.
Fun Fact: Larry thought he wanted to be an architect when he grew up (Don’t tell Rob!) but pretty quickly found out he was a lousy artist.
Rick is a Director of Corporate Advisory Services at the commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield. He is known in the industry for his unwavering integrity and honesty, paired with meticulous attention to detail. Prior to his career in real estate, Rick developed and sold a sportswear distribution company stemming from his time as a professional ski racer. In ministry, Rick is passionate about worship and seeing people grow spiritually as they transition from going to church on a Sunday to having a daily relationship with Jesus. Rick’s true loves are snowstorms, enchiladas and his wife, partner, and best friend, Jude.
Fun Fact: To this day, Rick is the only individual-sport athlete in his high school history to win the Most Outstanding Athlete Award (tennis AND ski racing).
Rob graduated college with a Bachelor’s of Architecture from Virginia Tech and spent the first eleven years of his career working on large commercial projects for architectural firms in Salt Lake City. When he and his wife Heidi began having children, he began his own venture, SugarHouse Architects, so he could have the flexibility to be more involved in raising his two boys. Work keeps him very busy, though he has been known to play hooky on a big powder day! Rob and his family love living in the mountains of Park City where they ski, mountain bike, and have their own opportunity to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Rob is passionate about serving in ministry behind the scenes and helping others to see that beauty as well.
