“Taming the Untamable”

Consider the power of the tongue. With it, teachers instruct their students, leaders inspire, a friend comforts a grieving loved one, a groom declares his vow to his bride. But that same tongue is the source of some of our greatest evil. A woman breaks a confidence, betraying her friend to another, a perfectionist parent belittles a child, stripping his self-esteem. I think we can all agree: sticks and stones may break my bones, but words hurt really bad, too. What if you prayed this prayer “set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips”?

HOMEWORK

Proverbs 10:19

God, help us do the impossible. Help us tame the tongue. Give us a vision for the way you want us to speak. Give us the faith to pray that practical but powerful prayer so you can shape us into the people you called us to be.

May the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart be pleasing in God’s sight.
