Forgiveness is free but trust is earned.
We can learn a lot about healthy forgiveness in the context of Henry Cloud’s “Boundaries”. He distinguishes forgiveness from reconciliation and from trust. Forgiveness deals with our past, reconciliation concerns the present, and trust looks to the future. They are distinct actions. May God show you why you should forgive, how you can reconcile, and when you can trust.
The Bible hands us examples of people who can change and incredible examples of forgiveness. Like Joseph and Judah. But as we face a challenge of forgiving, perhaps we should consider the backdrop of Christ’s work for us. Luke 23:34 – Jesus said “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.”
