BAPTISM

The Lord asks us to publicly declare our dedication to Him through water Baptism. You don’t have to have pages of scripture memorized or have the perfect life (nobody does!) Baptism is between you and God, wherever you are at, and surrendering all that we are to Him who loves us unconditionally.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM?

It is a public declaration of an inward decision to put your trust in Christ.

Baptism is a public declaration that you’ve become a disciple of Jesus, trusting him for this life and the life after this one. The act of being baptism does not “save” you. Only your faith in Christ brings you in a restored relationship with God.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… It is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

It illustrates your identification with Christ’s burial and resurrection.

…having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. “ Colossians 2:12

It illustrates your new life as a follower of Jesus.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4

It symbolizes a washing and cleansing of sins.

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” Acts 22:16

WHY BE BAPTIZED BY IMMERSION?

Jesus was baptized by immersion.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.” Matthew 3:16

Other baptisms in the Bible were by immersion.

…then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water…” Acts 8:38-39

The word “baptize” means “to immerse.”

The Greek word “baptizo” means “to immerse; to dip under water.” It symbolizes a burial (being immersed into the water) and resurrection (being raised from the water).

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?

Every person who has put their faith in Jesus as Lord of their lives.

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” Acts 2:41

But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12

At Capital Church, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

WHAT WILL MY PUBLIC DECLARATION LOOK LIKE?

Because baptism is a public declaration of faith, we ask our baptism candidates to prepare a brief testimony to accompany your baptism.

Sharing Your Testimony

Baptism is a special moment in your life. It is an opportunity to share your faith in Christ with others. When you are baptized, no matter what your age or background, you are obeying Jesus’ command to all His followers. Water baptism symbolizes Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection (Romans 6:1-4).

Water baptism portrays your sins being forgiven and cleansed. Your sins are forgiven when you confess them (1 John 1:9) and are cleansed by Jesus’ shed blood (1 John 1:7). Your baptism shows others a vivid picture of this cleansing and forgiveness. Baptism itself does not secure your salvation; instead, it identifies you with Jesus Christ and His church. By being baptized, you are saying to the world, “I commit myself to Christ and His kingdom, and I commit to learning from Him how to live my life.

The seriousness of this commitment and the symbol baptism conveys to those who see it are incredible ways for you to share your faith. It’s exciting to think that your baptism can help lead another person to trust in Jesus as well.
